Let’s start with the main — with the engine, and then stumble upon the most famous «surprise» from the designers — the direction of rotation of the crankshaft. Honda, without exaggeration, the only brand of cars in the world, whose engine until recently rotated counterclockwise.
This is a unique design that has no analogues. At the time of the design of the engine, none of the experts who did not participate in the creation, did not believe that this design will be viable. It would seem — why reinvent the wheel, i.e. the engine, when for decades the work of the crankshaft clockwise has proven to be the best side? But no, Honda has always been a generator of non-standard solutions — and here we have a rotating engine back. Such engines are the most common in Honda cars. D13B, D15B, ZC, D16A, B16A, B16B, B18C, F20B, B20B, — all this marking motors «reverse» rotation. They share a common feature-they all have a timing belt.
Only on the latest models of cars – Fit (Jazz), Civic, Accord, Element, CR-V and others — began to be installed motors with chain drive of the gas distribution mechanism. This engine L13A, L15A, K20A, K24A.
It is worth noting that with the change of the belt on the chain was replaced and the direction of rotation. It is difficult to say why this happened, but the fact remains. Since 2001, Honda has joined the «hourly» engines, until 2005, still producing belt engines with «reverse» rotation, however, to date, all produced from the conveyor cars have «correct» rotating crankshaft.
Further. The second pleasant surprise found in Honda engines is the system of dynamic change of gas distribution phases (Variable valve Timing and lift Electronic Control — VTEC). It was first used in 1988 on a Honda Integra with ZC engine, and allowed to «remove» from the engine with a volume of 1600 cc 160 HP the Result is unique, especially when you consider that it was achieved without the use of additional turbo installations and other things, i.e. on an atmospheric engine! For a long time, only two automakers in the world-Ferrari and Honda – could boast of such a volume/power ratio.
What is the secret of VTEC? Speaking in simple layman language, — this technology of change of phases of gas distribution is based on mechanical processes. Installed in the engine camshaft (or, if we’re talking about engines such as B16B two races-predual) has a special «double» position of the jaws placed under a certain angle. Upon reaching a certain number of revolutions (eg, Civic EG4 with a single – shaft motor D15b 130 HP-4500 rpm), the computer gives the command, and the engine goes to work on the large Cam camshaft, changing the course of opening/closing valves. Thus, with the help of such a simple and ingenious design, Honda engineers were able to create the most optimal elastic engine without turbocharging, capable of low speed for smooth and fast acceleration without the formation of failures, and at high speeds — for instant and effective (spectacular) acceleration.
In fairness, it should be noted that the VTEC system is used not only to increase the power of the car, but also to save fuel. However, it will be a different type of system, although built on the same principle. In this situation, only one inlet valve will open at low speed, letting in the lean-to mixture, which will significantly save both fuel and exhaust gas emissions into the atmosphere. To talk about some dynamics when driving in this mode is somewhat naive, even at high speeds, when under oil pressure the second valve is connected and the engine power increases.
But achieved incredible savings, even when driving in the city stream. Fuel consumption will be no more than 6.5 liters per 100 km, leaving the theoretical hope for the opportunity to «shoot» if necessary.
Summing up the conversation about the Honda engine, I would like to note that all without exception motors on these cars are extremely flexible and «revving», which requires special service conditions, although these conditions are quite simple. We will discuss them in the corresponding Chapter.
Considering further features of the device Honda, it is necessary to mention the transmission of these cars.
In fact, nothing is fundamentally unique in them-the same division into three main types as that of most modern automakers — manual transmission (manual transmission — MT), automatic transmission (automatic transmission — AT), and gearbox variator type (CVT).
We will not specifically dwell on the first option — the device of the manual transmission for many decades of use brought almost to perfection. The only thing that should be noted is that the robotic transmission installed on the latest versions of cars (for example Civic), in fact, is more a manual transmission than an automatic. But we will also talk about this in a separate Chapter.
The automatic transmission on Honda cars is a separate and very serious topic of conversation. Honda is one of the few, if not the only, companies in the world to produce its own automatic transmission for cars. Other automakers have long passed the production of these units to specialized companies. Until 1994, the design features of the automatic transmission on Honda cars had no fundamental difference from other «machines», but it was in 1994 that there was a final divergence of their ways. Third-party automatic boxes did not meet the requirements set by Honda engineers, and their interaction with elastic and revving motors was not effective enough. It turned out, the box or could not withstand design load, or was ballast preventing the motor to reveal the inherent designer opportunities.
From this point on, the automatic transmission for Honda is developed in a separate KB, owned by Honda itself. That is why these automatic gearboxes require specialized maintenance. There is nothing complicated in it, it is necessary to observe the simplest conditions, which, unfortunately, are often transformed in the mouth of a layman in the whole rites and with incredibly complex actions. Terms of service we will consider in the Chapter about the automatic transmission, but once again I would like to emphasize — nothing wrong with that. By the way, the automatic transmission also includes the famous «Tiptronic» boxes that allow you to «control» the box of the car while driving, creating the effect of greater control over the road. But we will consider this further.
Automatic variator type gearboxes (CVT) complete our quick overview of the automatic transmission. The invention applies to variators of the 50-th years of the twentieth century, so that to speak of sverhordinarnogo data nodes on Honda cars, they began to put in 1996, it is impossible. Nevertheless, the distinctive features still exist, and they relate primarily to the structural» know-how » of Honda engineers. The principle of the CVT is no different from other similar boxes, the same belt node, the same convenient stepless form of switching «gears». However, bearing in mind the revving engines in the design of the variator had to be laid an additional margin of reliability, which led to some features of care for the box. We will also discuss this in more detail in a separate Chapter.
The third distinctive feature of Honda cars for a long time was a multi-link independent suspension, providing the highest convenience of driving at high speeds. The advantages and disadvantages of multi-link suspension are still the cause of many discussions and polemics on various Internet forums. Of course, like any design, it has its admirers and opponents. Let’s try to briefly look inside and assess the need for such a structure in Honda cars. We must start all from the same with an elastic and revving engine combined with a well-made transmission. The lightness of the car itself and the excellent ratio of weight/power parameters led to the fact that the multi-link suspension, used mainly on sports cars, has become for Honda literally native.
Indeed, the successful design allowed the driver to » feel «the car at almost any speed — minimum rolls and the passage of» sharp «turns at high speed immediately allocated the same Civic from a huge number of»classmates». And this is a great merit of the suspension. Of course, to talk about some comfort and smoothness of the course, especially in the multi-link Civic is not necessary. The driver and passengers feel perfectly in such a car every bump and hole, but is not this the real happiness and feeling of a sports car?!
Care for multi-link suspension is not easy, but its advantages often make owners «forgive» financial and temporary inconveniences associated with its repair. We, of course, separately dwell on the multi-link suspension more sub-robno, especially since, after a six-year break, when in 2000, almost all Honda models switched to the suspension of the MacPherson type, it is back in operation today on the car Honda Civic sedan.
All of the above emphasizes the unique place of Honda in the ranks of other car manufacturers. The basic parameters of the average Honda car contain the potential of the sports car. Honda driver, as a rule, initially aware of the power, which he manages, and often seeks to realize the potential advantage over the» classmates » in real. Sharp starts and brakes, «poured» through the gate, all this allows the owner of Honda to dominate the road.
