That is why it is worth considering some of the most popular models separately, in order to still understand their true origin, quality and performance properties.

BMW engines M10, M20, M30, M40, M50

These motors were the first models developed by the famous concern. Crankcase ventilation system is quite primitive and works due to the pressure difference. Chu have minimal wear at 300-400 thousand km of distance traveled. But the valve seals begin to lose their elasticity after 200 thousand miles. This suggests that they are likely to be problems. It is also worth noting that the requirements for oil are low for the simple reason that the engines were created at a time when the market of oil synthetics was only gaining momentum of its development, which means that it was not possible to look for something better, it was necessary to take what is. This generation of engines, which was repaired without any problems in their own garage.

The engine BMW M10
The BMW M10 engine is a single-shaft carburetor motor that has an ignition distributor. The BMW M20 motor
The BMW M20 is the first six – cylinder belt-driven engine. This model took an intermediate place between M10 and M30. The fact is that the four cylinders of the model M10 did not give the opportunity to increase the engine capacity of more than 2 liters and reach full capacity, because the addition of two more cylinders helped to cope with the task. In our country, this engine was popular in the configuration with the body number 34, by the way, he has established himself on the positive side.

The BMW engine M50
According to statistics, this engine was the last potential «millionaire» of the first wave. This model has a number of significant differences, allowing to consider it apart from other engines of the first generation.

This engine gave a much-needed 4 valves per cylinder, founding fashion «explosive» nature of BMW engines that survive to the present day. In this motor there are some new items, namely more modern spark plugs and ignition coils. It was this model that set the standard, which subsequently was practically not violated — «1Nm by 10 cubic centimeters of cylinder volume», which was not possible to achieve in atmospheric engines of the previous generation. It is true that after that there was a need to significantly change the compression ratio from 10 to 11:1, this was repeated only in 2005, in the BMW N52 engine. This unit perfectly moves on 95 fuel, but for a 2-liter modification, even such a PTS may be small.

To compensate for this drawback, detonation sensors help, although the setting of the ignition moment only helps to smooth out the consequences of using the wrong fuel: the car, unfortunately, does not go better. Motor BMW M50-the last instance, using the «indestructible» tandem — » aluminum cylinder head-cast iron block.»

The unit, which appeared in 1989, on a set of consumer and technical characteristics, probably became the best in the history of BMW.

BMW engine M52
Considering this engine, immediately I want to say that its name sounds a little wrong, because in fact it is an improved series of M50. When in 1992, the unit received the update, it went to the market, having the index M50TU, and then, eventually, he decided to move into a new generation. After all, this is the first engine that has received a control mechanism for the timing of the intake shaft, known as VANOS.

The addition of 2 valves resulted in a doubling of the flow section, which adversely affected the filling capacity of the cylinders at low rpm. It also caused a curvature of torque characteristics, deteriorating the quality of driving at low speeds. The BMW VANOS system was to smooth out the engine operation by stretching the torque characteristic. Was raised power, and this was done absolutely standard — minders’ve added 300 cubes — get a 2.8 liter engine. By the way, according to some reports it became known that the non-standard engines of 2.8 and 2.3 liters were created, as it met the tax rules of Germany at that time.

Engine block BMW M52 was aluminum, but the cylinders got high strength nicelove coating. Manufacturers also took care of the environmental friendliness of their products and paid due attention to it. M52 was the first engine with crankcase gas ventilation system, it used a valve that opens «on demand» and has atmospheric pressure. Operation features are often associated with the emergence of problems with not yet fully electric equipment and expensive consumables — stretch and lose elasticity of the throttle drive cable, there are problems with the anti-wear system, expensive flow meters, ABS units and expensive titanium oxygen level sensors deteriorate. However, with proper care, you can count on an impressive engine life. Basically, the E39 and E36 models were equipped with this engine.

The BMW engine М54, M52TU
These motors are characterized by an improvement in the elasticity of the torque characteristics. The biggest and most significant difference between the new and the old unit is the thermostat, which has an opening point of 97 degrees — the operating mode is shifted to partial loads, which allowed for complete combustion of the fuel. This had a positive impact on the operation of the car in the city mode.

It was the BMW group that opened this system and still remains faithful to it, and no one until 2012 managed to intercept it and does not increase the degree of oil far beyond 100 degrees. If we talk about urban operation, the oil begins to oxidize twice as fast, and this leads to the fact that the maximum mileage is reduced and becomes equal to 180 thousand km.In addition, this engine is very fastidious to the choice of fuel, and if you neglect this point, in the future you can pay dearly.

The designers also took care to raise the power characteristics and that is why VANOS began to control the exhaust shaft, and the intake flap appears DISA. Only now the design is plastic, and therefore not durable. The M54B30 engine has a wide rpm range, but the striking characteristics of the M50 in it. By the way it should be noted an important point that the gas pedal becomes electronic and very sensitive. And in the block of aluminum cast iron sleeves are used for the last time, and this is a turning point in the history of the concern. The motor, despite all its small shortcomings is becoming very popular in our country, and is especially common in cars with a body E53, E46 and E39.
